Appliance Repair in Squirrel Hill Homes

Squirrel Hill's older brick houses, duplexes and apartment buildings shape how appliances are installed and serviced. What that means for a repair visit.

TrueFix Pittsburgh6 min read

Squirrel Hill is a City of Pittsburgh neighborhood, officially split into Squirrel Hill North and Squirrel Hill South, and it sits in the East End between Schenley Park and Frick Park. Most of its housing went up in the first decades of the twentieth century, as streetcar lines made the eastern hillsides practical places to live. That age is the key to understanding its appliance repairs.

The neighborhood falls largely in the 15217 ZIP code and is part of our East Liberty, Squirrel Hill and East End service area.

What the housing looks like

There's a lot of variety in a small area:

  • •Large single-family homes on the north side of the neighborhood, many of them brick, stone or stucco, in Tudor, Colonial and other period styles
  • •Smaller brick homes, foursquares and Tudor-style cottages on tighter lots, especially south of Forbes Avenue
  • •Duplexes and houses that were later converted into two or more apartments
  • •Small and mid-size apartment buildings, many close to the Forbes and Murray business district

Owners, long-time renters and students from the nearby universities all live here, often on the same street. Each group tends to bring different questions to an appliance repair. An owner of a century-old house may be weighing whether to repair a built-in refrigerator that fits the kitchen perfectly. A tenant mostly wants to know whether to call the landlord first. A landlord with a converted duplex may have two sets of appliances of different ages under one roof.

What that means for a repair visit

Kitchens that were made to fit

Many kitchens in homes of this era have been remodeled more than once, and appliances often sit in openings that were cut to fit a specific model. When a built-in refrigerator, a wall oven or a dishwasher tucked between old cabinets needs work, it may have to come out of that opening. That's normal, but it's worth mentioning when you book so the visit is planned properly.

It also matters if replacement comes up. A newer model may not fit the old opening without changes to the cabinetry, which can shift the balance toward repairing what's there.

Basement laundry

Laundry in older Squirrel Hill houses is usually in the basement. That tends to mean:

  • •Stairs. Narrow or steep basement steps and low headroom at the landing. Moving a washer or dryer out for service is a two-person job on some stairways.
  • •Older drains. A laundry tub or a standpipe that has been in place for decades, which can clog or back up and make a washer look faulty when it isn't. Our guide on washers that won't drain covers how to tell.
  • •Long dryer vents. A dryer on one side of the basement may vent out the far wall, with a long run and several turns. That can make even a healthy dryer slow, especially in winter. See our guide on dryers that run cold or slow.
  • •Damp. Basements in older homes can be humid, which is hard on metal cabinets and electrical connections over time.

Gas appliances

Many homes here cook and dry clothes with natural gas. Gas ranges, ovens and dryers are routine repairs, but they come with an extra step: the gas supply is shut off before any work that involves moving or opening the appliance. If you know where the shutoff valve is, that helps.

Duplexes and apartments

In a rental, the appliance usually belongs to the owner, not the tenant. Tenants should check with their landlord or property manager before booking. Landlords, it helps if you give us the unit number and any instructions for getting in, and tell your tenant when to expect us.

Apartment buildings may have their own rules for contractors, such as a particular entrance, an elevator you have to reserve, or notice to the building manager. Tell us about any of that when you book.

Electrical service in older houses

Houses from this era have usually had their wiring updated at least once, but not always everywhere. It's still common to find a kitchen or basement outlet shared by more than one appliance, or an older three-prong dryer receptacle where newer dryers are typically set up for a four-wire connection. None of that is an appliance fault, but it can cause breaker trips or complicate installing a replacement. If an outlet feels warm, looks scorched or only works when the plug is wiggled, have an electrician look at it before anyone blames the appliance plugged into it.

Parking

Many Squirrel Hill streets have on-street parking only, and some blocks are busy, especially around the business district. If there's a driveway we can use, or a specific place to park, let us know.

What we repair here

The same things we repair across the county: refrigerators and freezers, washers and dryers, dishwashers, ovens and ranges, cooktops, microwaves, ice makers and wine coolers. We work on the mainstream brands common in rentals and on the premium built-in brands found in many renovated kitchens.

How a visit works:

  1. A technician comes to your home and diagnoses the appliance.
  2. They explain what failed and what the repair will be.
  3. You approve the price before any work begins.
  4. If it isn't worth fixing, we'll tell you.

We're an independent repair company, not an authorized service center for any brand, so an appliance still under its manufacturer's warranty should go to the manufacturer first.

Before you book

Have the model and serial number ready, from the label inside the door or on the back. Note the symptoms and any error codes. And mention stairs, parking, building access and whether the home is a rental.

To set up a visit, call or book online. You can also see the full list of ZIP codes and areas we serve.

Rather Have a Technician Take a Look?

Give us the make, the model number and the symptom when you book. We test it in your home, show you what failed, and quote the repair; you decide whether it goes ahead.
