Repairs in Verona & Verona Hilltop

ZIP 15147 is centered on Verona, a small borough on the left bank of the Allegheny about thirteen miles upriver from Downtown. Oakmont borders it on the north, and the Municipality of Penn Hills surrounds it to the east and south. The ZIP also delivers to Penn Hills streets on the hill above, including the area called Verona Hilltop.

Verona was settled long before it became a borough in 1871, and it governs itself separately from Penn Hills. A Verona mailing address therefore does not settle which municipality you live in, and that can matter for permits, water and trash. O'Hara Township lies directly across the river.

Inside the borough, houses stand close together on a narrow band of flat ground between the river and the hillside. Many date from the decades when the town had railroad shops, tool works and mills. The Penn Hills portion is more suburban, with detached houses from the middle of the twentieth century onward set on sloping lots.

Watch the low spots near Plum Creek

Plum Creek runs through Verona to the river, and the flat ground near it and near the Allegheny is the lowest in the ZIP. If your basement sits on that low ground, keep the washer, dryer and any freezer up off the floor on blocks or a stand, and test the sump pump each spring. After a heavy storm, check the floor before running anything plugged into an outlet near it.

Borough houses on the flats

The older Verona houses were built when a kitchen meant an icebox and a cookstove, and today's appliances have been fitted in afterward. Refrigerators often sit in a corner with almost no air gap, gas stoves connect to piping that has seen several renovations, and the basement laundry may share space with an old coal room. None of that rules out a long service life, but it rewards small habits: vacuuming the refrigerator coil, keeping the dryer's vent run short and straight, and replacing old rubber washer hoses with braided ones.

Hillside homes on the Penn Hills side

Above the borough, the Verona Hilltop streets and nearby Penn Hills neighborhoods have ranches and split-levels with attached or basement garages. A second refrigerator or freezer in the garage is common in houses like these, and January cold can confuse the thermostat of a model not built for it. Walk-out basements on the downhill side make laundry access easy, but the uphill wall is often the damp one, so a dehumidifier helps the dryer as much as the house.

Along Allegheny River Boulevard

Allegheny River Boulevard is the borough's main street, running along the river past homes and small businesses. Renters in apartments here often share a basement laundry or use stacked machines in a closet, and those compact units have little room around them for service. If you rent, find out from your landlord who arranges repairs before booking, since the price is explained and approved before work begins.

Small commercial kitchens and offices along the street can also call on us for light commercial appliances, such as undercounter refrigerators and ice machines.

FAQ

15147: Questions We Hear

Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.

Something else on your mind?

Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.

Yes. Besides the borough itself, the ZIP reaches into the neighboring part of Penn Hills, including the Verona Hilltop area. We serve the whole ZIP either way; just give us the full street address when you book.

It can be. Refrigerators release heat through the coils and need some space at the sides, top and back, depending on the model. In a tight spot the compressor runs longer and parts wear faster. Check the manual's clearances, keep the coils clean, and mention the setup when you book.

In older houses the washer and dryer are often downstairs, past narrow steps and low beams, draining to a laundry tub or floor drain. Tell us how to get down there.
Rowhouses & older homes
New appliances often sit on old wiring, gas lines and vents. We check what feeds the machine as well as the machine.
Hillsides & parking
Steps up to the front door, permit-only blocks, alley entrances. A note about access when you book gets the visit started sooner.
Rentals & landlords
Tenants can book. The owner or manager gets the diagnosis and the price, and approves before any work.
Cold garages & porches
A spare fridge or freezer in an unheated space may stop holding temperature in winter without anything having failed. Check the manual's temperature range first.
Honest advice
If an older machine isn't worth the repair, we'll tell you so, and explain what actually broke.
