Repairs in West Mifflin

ZIP 15122 is West Mifflin, a broad suburban borough on the high ground south of the Monongahela, across the river from Braddock and upstream from Homestead and Munhall. PA 51 and PA 885 carry most of its traffic, Lebanon Church Road crosses the middle, and the borough line meets the river in three separate stretches.

West Mifflin is one borough with one council, much larger in area than the river towns around it. It holds a lot of regional landmarks: Kennywood, which opened as a trolley park in 1898; Allegheny County Airport, a general aviation field dedicated in 1931; the South Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County; and U.S. Steel's Irvin Plant. The Century III Mall closed in 2019 and its building has been torn down.

Homes here are mainly from the postwar decades: brick ranches with full basements, split-levels and bi-levels, Cape Cods, and some newer townhouses and apartment complexes. Lots are larger than across the river, with driveways and attached or detached garages, and the land rolls enough that walk-out lower levels are common.

A quick check on split-level dryer vents

In a West Mifflin split-level, the dryer usually vents through the rim joist to a hood a foot or two above the ground. Before calling about a slow dryer, go outside while it runs and feel for strong airflow at the hood. If it is weak, check for leaves, grass clippings, a bird nest or snow, and look behind the dryer for a crushed or kinked duct. Clearing these restores drying time more often than any part replacement does.

Garage refrigerators and freezers on the upland

Plenty of West Mifflin houses keep a second refrigerator or freezer in the garage, handy for drinks in summer. Winter is a different story. When the garage drops toward freezing, a regular refrigerator's thermostat senses cold and stops the compressor, which also feeds the freezer, so frozen food begins to thaw while the fresh-food side seems fine. Some models are rated for garages; most are not. Look up your model's ambient range or bring the unit into the basement for the cold months.

Postwar basements and lower-level laundry

In ranch houses the laundry is usually in the basement near the water heater, draining into a standpipe or a laundry tub. Split-levels place it on the lowest floor, sometimes partly below grade and prone to damp. Washers on concrete need level, locked feet to avoid walking, and hoses that are original to the house should be replaced with braided ones.

Basements that take on water in heavy summer storms put the bottom of washers, dryers and freezers at risk. If water ever reaches the motor or control, unplug the appliance and have it checked before running it again.

Kitchens updated in stages

Many West Mifflin kitchens have been remodeled once or twice since the house was built. That often means a newer range or dishwasher connected to older wiring and plumbing. A new dishwasher draining into an old disposal, or a dual-fuel range on a circuit sized for a smaller appliance, can cause problems that look like appliance faults. We check the connection along with the machine.

15122: Questions We Hear

Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.

Something else on your mind?

Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.

Yes. Any address in 15122 is in our service area, from the streets near Kennywood and the river to the neighborhoods around Allegheny County Airport, the CCAC South Campus and Lebanon Church Road. Call or book online and give us your street.

A freezer that never cycles off is often fighting a dirty condenser coil, a worn door gasket or a failing fan. Damp basements make coils collect dust faster. Clean the coil and check the seal with a dollar bill test. If it still runs constantly or the food is softening, book a diagnosis.

Rowhouses & older homes
New appliances often sit on old wiring, gas lines and vents. We check what feeds the machine as well as the machine.
Hillsides & parking
Steps up to the front door, permit-only blocks, alley entrances. A note about access when you book gets the visit started sooner.
Rentals & landlords
Tenants can book. The owner or manager gets the diagnosis and the price, and approves before any work.
Cold garages & porches
A spare fridge or freezer in an unheated space may stop holding temperature in winter without anything having failed. Check the manual's temperature range first.
Honest advice
If an older machine isn't worth the repair, we'll tell you so, and explain what actually broke.
