How Whirlpool builds its washers
Whirlpool top-loaders fall into two groups. Older direct-drive machines use a motor coupled to a transmission, and a worn drive coupler is the classic reason they fill and drain but won't agitate or spin. Newer high-efficiency top-loaders use a lid lock, a shifter and a speed sensor, and they report problems with codes such as LF for a long fill and a long-drain code when the pump can't empty the tub. Front-loaders add a door lock, a door boot and a pump filter. In a basement laundry, where the washer drains to a laundry tub or a standpipe, a slow or backed-up drain can make the machine look faulty, so we check the plumbing too.
Parts that tend to fail on Whirlpool washers
- Drive coupler worn on direct-drive models
- Lid lock not locking for spin
- Drain pump blocked
- Shifter failure on HE top-loaders
- Water inlet valve slow (LF)

Whirlpool Washer: Questions We Hear
Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.
Something else on your mind?
Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.
Usually it's the drive coupler, a small part that links the motor to the transmission and wears out by design. It's a routine, one-part repair. A transmission failure is less common and a bigger decision.
LF means long fill. Make sure both faucets are fully on and the hoses aren't kinked. The inlet valve screens can clog with sediment. If the water supply is fine, we test the inlet valve and the water-level sensing.
