How Whirlpool builds its dryers
Whirlpool's belt-drive dryer platform has been built for a long time, and it's easy to repair. On electric models, the heating element sits in a housing at the back with a thermal fuse, a thermal cutoff and a high-limit thermostat. When airflow drops, the cutoff or fuse opens, and the dryer tumbles without heat or won't start at all. Gas models use an igniter, a flame sensor and gas valve coils. Worn drum rollers, the idler pulley and the belt cause most of the noises. Many basement dryers in older homes vent through a long or crushed duct, which is the real cause of many repeat fuse failures, so we check the vent and tell you what we find.
Parts that tend to fail on Whirlpool dryers
- Thermal fuse blown from vent restriction
- Heating element coil broken
- Gas igniter or valve coils failed
- Drum rollers or idler pulley worn
- Drive belt snapped
The general dryer repair guide covers faults that turn up on every make.
Whirlpool Dryer: Questions We Hear
Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.
Something else on your mind?
Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.
On many Whirlpool dryers, a blown thermal fuse cuts power to the motor, so the dryer won't start. The fuse usually blows because of a restricted vent. We replace the fuse and check the vent, or it will blow again.
Drum rollers, the idler pulley and the drum glides are the usual culprits. They are common, well-stocked parts on this platform. We replace the worn ones and check the belt at the same time.
