Smeg Repair in Houses, Apartments and Rentals
Smeg is bought for how it looks, and the pastel FAB refrigerator is the obvious example. Underneath the styling it's a European appliance, with European habits: flame-failure valves on gas burners, cooling fans in the ovens, filters that need hand cleaning. We repair Smeg independently, not as a Smeg service center, so if yours is still under the maker's warranty, contact Smeg first. After that, we diagnose it at home and quote before any work.
How a Repair Visit Works
Describe the Problem
The brand, the model number if it's handy, and what the appliance is doing. A photo of the rating label is a bonus.
Diagnosis On Site
The technician tests the appliance and its power, water, drain, gas or vent until the failed part is found.
Explanation and Quote
You hear what failed and what the repair costs, then decide. Nothing starts without your OK.
Repair and Test
The part goes in, the appliance runs a cycle, and you see that it works before we leave.

A family company from northern Italy
Smeg was started by Vittorio Bertazzoni in 1948 in the town of Guastalla, in Emilia-Romagna, and it is still family-run. It's best known in the US for its 1950s-style FAB refrigerators and matching small appliances, but it also builds ovens, ranges, cooktops, dishwashers, wine coolers and built-in microwaves.
In Pittsburgh, Smeg shows up in kitchen remodels where the owner wanted something with character: renovated rowhouses in Lawrenceville and Bloomfield, older homes in Squirrel Hill and Shadyside, and condos Downtown. A FAB refrigerator in a compact kitchen or a Portofino range as a centerpiece is typical.
European design choices that affect repairs
Smeg gas burners use a thermocouple flame-failure device, so the knob has to be held in for a few seconds after lighting until the thermocouple warms up. A burner that goes out when you let go is often a thermocouple or its position, not a gas problem.
Smeg ovens have a cooling fan that keeps running after cooking to protect the controls and cabinetry. Many FAB refrigerators defrost by letting frost melt off the back wall and run into a small drain hole, which can clog and leave water pooled at the bottom of the fridge.
Parts and patience
Common Smeg parts like thermocouples, igniters, elements, fans and gaskets are usually available through Smeg's North American parts channel. Trim pieces, colored panels, handles and less common boards may have to come from Italy and can take time. We confirm availability by model and serial number during the visit and tell you honestly how long the wait may be.
Smeg, product by product
- Refrigerators: FAB retro refrigerators and built-in models. Common calls: water pooling from a clogged defrost drain, frost in the freezer compartment, door gaskets, thermostats and fans.
- Dishwashers: Built-in and fully integrated dishwashers. Usual repairs: poor draining from clogged filters, anti-flood shutoff, inlet valves, door hinges and heating faults.
- Ovens: Built-in electric ovens and the ovens in Smeg ranges. Calls include convection fan noise, element failures, cooling fan faults and temperature problems.
- Microwaves: Built-in microwaves and combination microwave ovens. Calls include no heat, door switch faults and control problems.
- Cooktops: Gas, induction and electric cooktops. Most calls involve burners that go out when the knob is released, igniters and induction zones that shut off.
- Wine Coolers: Undercounter and built-in wine coolers. Calls typically involve temperature drift, fan noise and worn door seals.
- Stoves: The burner side of Smeg ranges, including the retro Victoria and Portofino lines. Common complaints: burners that won't stay lit, clicking igniters and uneven flame.
- Ranges: Dual-fuel, gas and induction ranges from 24 to 48 inches. Typical repairs: thermocouples, igniters, oven elements, convection and cooling fans, and door hinges.
Getting Smeg parts
Smeg parts come through Smeg's North American parts distribution, and common repair parts are usually available. Cosmetic parts, colored trim and less common electronics may ship from Italy and take longer. We confirm fit using the model and serial number and give you a realistic arrival time for it before you say yes.
Smeg: Questions We Hear
Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.
Something else on your mind?
Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.
Smeg gas burners have a flame-failure safety device. Holding the knob lets the thermocouple heat up and keep the gas valve open. If the burner goes out when you release it after holding it for several seconds, the thermocouple may need attention.
The drain hole at the back of the fridge compartment may be blocked. Frost melts off the back wall and runs into that hole; if it clogs, water pools. Clearing the drain usually fixes it.
Common repair parts are usually available. Colored panels, trim and some electronics can take longer since they may come from Italy.
