Amana Repair in Houses, Apartments and Rentals
Independent is the key word: we are not part of Amana's or Whirlpool's service network, so an Amana still under the maker's warranty should be reported to them first. Out of warranty, an Amana is usually a simple Whirlpool-built machine with few electronics, and simple faults stay cheap to fix. Because a new Amana is itself inexpensive, we weigh every quote against replacement and tell you plainly when the repair is not worth it.
How a Repair Visit Works
Describe the Problem
The brand, the model number if it's handy, and what the appliance is doing. A photo of the rating label is a bonus.
Diagnosis On Site
The technician tests the appliance and its power, water, drain, gas or vent until the failed part is found.
Explanation and Quote
You hear what failed and what the repair costs, then decide. Nothing starts without your OK.
Repair and Test
The part goes in, the appliance runs a cycle, and you see that it works before we leave.

From the Amana Colonies to Whirlpool's value line
The name comes from the Amana Colonies in Iowa, where the company started in the 1930s building refrigeration equipment. Raytheon bought it in 1965, and two years later Amana released the Radarange, one of the first countertop microwave ovens sold for home kitchens. The appliance business later passed to Maytag, and Whirlpool acquired Maytag in 2006.
Today Amana is Whirlpool's entry-level appliance badge. Amana heating and air conditioning equipment is a separate business under a license, so a furnace or central air unit with the Amana name has nothing to do with the kitchen and laundry line.
Where Amanas show up
Amana machines are bought for their price, which makes them a common pick for rentals and for replacing a dead appliance quickly: student apartments around Oakland and South Side, duplexes split into units, a basement laundry pair in a brick rowhouse, or a garage refrigerator in a suburban split-level. Landlords managing several units see a lot of them.
The simplicity is an advantage in an old house. A basic agitator washer or a 29-inch dryer is lighter and easier to service at the bottom of a narrow basement stair than a large front-loading pair.
What a basic design means for repair
Most current Amana laundry machines are built on Whirlpool platforms, and the refrigerators, ranges and dishwashers share Whirlpool parts too. That means familiar failures, common parts and short diagnosis. Mechanical timers and simple controls on many models also mean fewer expensive boards.
The trade-off is value. When the fault is a belt, a fuse, a valve, an igniter or a switch, repair makes sense. When the diagnosis lands on refrigerant, a washer transmission or the main board of an aging unit, a new Amana may cost less than fixing the old one, and we say so.
Amana, product by product
- Refrigerators: Top-mount, bottom-mount and side-by-side layouts built on Whirlpool platforms. Defrost parts, evaporator fans, start relays, ice makers and door gaskets are the usual repairs.
- Washers: Top-load agitator washers, many with simple dial controls, plus some front-loaders. Lid switches or locks, drain pumps, couplers, shifters and agitator parts come up most.
- Dryers: Electric and gas 29-inch dryers on Whirlpool's long-running platform. Thermal fuses, elements, igniters, valve coils, belts, idler pulleys and drum rollers are the common work.
- Dishwashers: Basic built-in dishwashers with Whirlpool pumps and valves. Filters, drain pumps, inlet valves, door latches and float switches cause most calls.
- Ovens: The oven cavity of Amana gas and electric ranges. Bake and broil elements, glow-bar igniters, oven sensors and thermostats account for most repairs.
- Microwaves: Over-the-range and countertop microwaves. Door switches, diodes, magnetrons, turntable motors and vent fans are the common repairs.
- Freezers: Freezer compartments of Amana refrigerators and standalone freezers. Start relays, defrost parts, thermostats and gaskets are the usual failures.
- Cooktops: The cooktops of Amana ranges: coil electric, radiant glass and gas burners. Receptacles, infinite switches, elements, igniters and spark switches fail most.
- Stoves: Freestanding gas and electric Amana stoves with simple controls, common in rentals. Coil receptacles, oven igniters, bake elements and burner ignition are the everyday repairs.
- Ranges: Freestanding Amana ranges, including self-clean and electronic-control models. Controls, oven sensors, igniters, elements and door locks are what usually need work.
Getting Amana parts
Current Amana appliances are built by Whirlpool, so most parts come through Whirlpool's parts network and are often shared with Whirlpool and Maytag models. Belts, pumps, valves, igniters and switches are usually easy to get. Older Amana models from before Whirlpool, or those with brand-specific boards, can be harder. We check your model number and weigh the repair against replacement before quoting.

No. Amana heating and cooling equipment is a separate business that uses the name under license. Our work covers the kitchen and laundry appliances only.
Often, when the fault is small: a belt, a fuse, a valve, an igniter, a switch or a pump. Big-ticket failures on an aging unit, like the compressor, the transmission or the main board, often favor a new basic machine. You get both options before deciding.
Yes. Tell us who approves the cost and who provides access. The person paying gets the diagnosis and quote before work starts, and we note when a unit is near the end of its useful life.
