Kenmore Repair in Houses, Apartments and Rentals

Our Kenmore work is independent, with no tie to Kenmore, Transformco or Sears service. If yours is new enough to still be under its original coverage, use that first. Otherwise, a Kenmore repair begins with a question most people never think to ask: which manufacturer actually built the machine. The prefix on the model number answers it, and they decide which parts, codes and test procedures apply.

Basement laundry
In older houses the washer and dryer are often downstairs, past narrow steps and low beams, draining to a laundry tub or floor drain. Tell us how to get down there.
Rowhouses & older homes
New appliances often sit on old wiring, gas lines and vents. We check what feeds the machine as well as the machine.
Hillsides & parking
Steps up to the front door, permit-only blocks, alley entrances. A note about access when you book gets the visit started sooner.
Rentals & landlords
Tenants can book. The owner or manager gets the diagnosis and the price, and approves before any work.
Cold garages & porches
A spare fridge or freezer in an unheated space may stop holding temperature in winter without anything having failed. Check the manual's temperature range first.
Honest advice
If an older machine isn't worth the repair, we'll tell you so, and explain what actually broke.

How a Repair Visit Works

01

Describe the Problem

The brand, the model number if it's handy, and what the appliance is doing. A photo of the rating label is a bonus.

02

Diagnosis On Site

The technician tests the appliance and its power, water, drain, gas or vent until the failed part is found.

03

Explanation and Quote

You hear what failed and what the repair costs, then decide. Nothing starts without your OK.

04

Repair and Test

The part goes in, the appliance runs a cycle, and you see that it works before we leave.

Kenmore

A store label on other makers' machines

Kenmore started as a Sears house label early in the twentieth century and grew into one of the most familiar appliance names in the country. Sears never ran a factory for most of it. Whirlpool, Frigidaire (Electrolux), LG and other manufacturers built Kenmore appliances to order, and a Kenmore refrigerator and a Kenmore washer bought on the same day could come from different companies.

Transformco (Transform Holdco) acquired the brand with most of Sears's assets in 2019 and still owns it. The practical point hasn't changed: the badge tells you who sold the appliance, not who designed it.

Reading the model number

Kenmore model numbers are written as a three-digit prefix, a dot, then the rest, such as 106.xxxxxxxx. The prefix is a source code. 106 and 110 point to Whirlpool, 253 points to Frigidaire and Electrolux, and 795 and 796 point to LG. There are other prefixes as well, and we look up the one on your label rather than relying on memory.

Once the builder is known, a Kenmore gets diagnosed the way that maker's own model would. A 110 dryer is a Whirlpool dryer inside, and a 796 front-loader shares LG's design. A photo of the label sent with the booking lets us do that research ahead of the visit.

Kenmores in Pittsburgh homes

For decades Sears stores sold Kenmore across the region, so the brand is everywhere in older housing stock: washer and dryer pairs in the basement of a brick rowhouse, an extra fridge or chest freezer out in the garage of a Baldwin or Penn Hills split-level, a range in a rental apartment. Many of those machines are older and still running.

Age cuts both ways. Older Whirlpool-built Kenmore laundry machines are simple and easy to get parts for. Other older models, especially ones with discontinued control boards, may not justify a large repair, and we say so before anything is ordered.

Parts through the real maker

Parts for a Kenmore generally come from the manufacturer that built it, under that maker's part numbers, and many are the same parts used in that maker's own branded models. That keeps most wear parts easy to find. Kenmore-specific trim, control panels and some boards are the exceptions and can be scarce on older units.

Kenmore, product by product

  • Refrigerators: Every door layout, from top-freezer to French-door, supplied by Whirlpool (106), Frigidaire (253) and LG (795). Defrost failures, fans, ice makers and water valves lead the repair list.
  • Washers: Top-loaders and front-loaders, much of it built by Whirlpool (110) or LG (796). Drain pumps, lid and door locks, couplers, shifters and door boots are the usual repairs.
  • Dryers: Gas and electric dryers, mostly Whirlpool (110) or LG (796) designs. Thermal fuses, elements, igniters and gas valve coils, belts and rollers make up most calls.
  • Dishwashers: Built-in Kenmore and Kenmore Elite dishwashers from more than one maker. Drain pumps, filters, inlet valves, door latches and wash motors are the common repairs.
  • Ovens: The oven cavities of Kenmore ranges and some wall ovens. Bake and broil elements, oven sensors, gas igniters and door locks fail most often.
  • Microwaves: Over-the-range and countertop microwaves from outside makers, LG among them. Common work: units that hum without heating, interlock switches, hood fans and turntable motors.
  • Freezers: Upright and chest freezers and freezer compartments, many Frigidaire-built (253). Start relays, defrost parts, gaskets and thermostats are frequent repairs.
  • Cooktops: Gas, radiant and coil cooktops and range tops. Igniters, spark switches, infinite switches, coil receptacles and radiant elements account for most calls.
  • Stoves: Freestanding gas and electric Kenmore stoves, common in rentals and older kitchens. Oven igniters, bake elements, surface burner ignition and coil receptacles are the usual work.
  • Ranges: Freestanding and slide-in ranges, including convection models. Controls, touchpads, convection fans, oven sensors and igniters are what usually fail.

Getting Kenmore parts

Kenmore parts are ordered through the manufacturer that actually built the appliance, identified from the model prefix, and many are shared with that maker's own branded models. Common items like pumps, valves, belts, igniters and fans are usually easy to get. Kenmore-specific control panels, trim and some older boards are harder, and a few are discontinued. We look up your full model number before quoting and tell you when an equivalent part is the only option.

FAQ

Kenmore: Questions We Hear

Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.

Something else on your mind?

Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.

Several manufacturers, depending on the product and the year. Read the prefix, the part of the model number ahead of the dot: 106 and 110 are Whirlpool, 253 is Frigidaire (Electrolux), and 795 and 796 are LG. Other prefixes exist, and we look yours up.

It is on the rating label. Refrigerators usually have it inside the fresh-food section on a side wall or ceiling. Washers and dryers have it under the lid, inside the door frame or on the rear panel. Dishwashers print it on the door's side edge or the tub rim. A clear photo is ideal.

It depends on the fault and the builder. An older Whirlpool-built washer or dryer with a worn belt, pump or thermal fuse is usually worth it. Compressor work, refrigerant leaks and unavailable boards on an aging unit usually are not. You get the quote and our honest view before any work.

No. We are an independent service with no link to Kenmore, Transformco or Sears. If your Kenmore is still covered by its original warranty or a protection plan, check that first.
