Range Repair in Pittsburgh

A range is the whole appliance: cooktop, oven, control and the gas or power supply that feeds them. This page is for problems that involve more than one burner or the oven alone.

What makes a range different

A range combines a cooktop and an oven, but it also has a shared control, a shared power supply, and on gas models, a regulator and a single gas connection. Faults in those shared parts affect everything at once: a dead display, all burners out, the oven and surface both erratic, or problems after a move.

Freestanding ranges have finished sides and a backguard with controls. Slide-in ranges sit between cabinets with front controls. A dual-fuel range pairs gas burners with an electric oven, so it's plumbed to the gas line and also wired to a 240V circuit. Pro-style ranges (Wolf, Viking and Thermador are the familiar names) run heavier burners, often several ovens, and components built for service.

Installation matters more than people expect. An anti-tip bracket, a level floor, a proper gas connector and the right cord for the outlet all affect safety and performance.

Range symptoms and likely causes

Symptoms that involve the whole appliance, and the shared parts that cause them.

Display dead, nothing works
Tripped breaker, one side of a 240V circuit out, loose power cord or terminal block, control board, thermal fuse
All gas burners weak or won't light
Gas valve partly closed, regulator problem, low supply pressure, spark module
Both burners and oven act up
Control board, wiring harness, loose terminal block, voltage problem at the outlet
Range tips or rocks when the door opens
Anti-tip bracket missing or not engaged, floor not level, leveling legs out of adjustment
Dual-fuel oven dead, burners fine
240V circuit tripped or miswired, oven control, element
Problems started after moving it
Gas connector kinked, cord or terminal block loosened, damaged harness, regulator
One oven of a double-oven range not heating
Element or igniter for that cavity, sensor, relay on the control

Safe checks before booking

  1. Check the breaker. Any range with an electric oven or elements sits on a two-pole 240V breaker; one tripped side can leave the display working while the oven or elements don't.
  2. On a gas range, make sure the shutoff valve behind the range is fully open. If only the burners or only the oven fail, it's probably not the supply.
  3. Open the oven door and press lightly. If the back lifts, the anti-tip bracket isn't engaged.
  4. After an outage or a code, flip the range's breaker off, wait a minute, and flip it back on. That reboots the control.
  5. Note any code on the display and the model number from the frame behind the storage drawer or oven door.

Before you touch anything: If you smell gas, leave immediately and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Don't slide a gas range out yourself: the flexible connector can crack if it's bent or stretched. The cord and terminal block on an electric range stay live until the breaker is off.

When a range needs a technician

  • The range is dead with power and gas confirmed.
  • The burners and oven both behave erratically.
  • Problems started after moving or installing the range.
  • The anti-tip bracket is missing or the range rocks.
  • You smell gas or see burning at the cord.

What a range repair visit involves

We check supply first: voltage at the outlet or terminal block, and gas pressure and the connector on gas models. Then the technician tests the control, harness and whichever cooking section is failing. If the range needs to come out, we'll pull it out, close off the gas where needed, and put it back with the anti-tip bracket engaged.

You get the diagnosis and a price first, and nothing is done until you say so.

Repairing or replacing a range

Most range repairs are affordable: igniters, elements, switches, sensors, cords and even many control boards. A basic range with a rusted-out oven or several failures at once may not be worth it.

Dual-fuel and pro-style ranges are worth repairing almost every time, since they cost far more to replace and are designed to be serviced. In an older kitchen, replacement also means matching the cutout between cabinets and possibly updating the gas or electrical connection.

Why Book Us for Range Repair

The whole unit diagnosed as a system

Slide-in and pro-style ranges share controls and wiring between cooktop and oven, so they're tested as one appliance rather than one burner at a time.

Dual-fuel and pro-style ranges planned for

These ranges mix a gas top with an electric oven or use heavy commercial-style parts, and parts and handling are planned around that.

Clear options on older ranges

When a control board is discontinued or a repair approaches the price of a new range, the options are laid out before any work starts.

Range Repair in Houses, Apartments and Rentals

Pittsburgh kitchens hold everything from a 30-inch gas range in a rowhouse to dual-fuel and pro-style ranges in renovated homes and suburban kitchens. Old floors that aren't level, tight kitchens where a range barely slides out, and older wiring and gas lines all affect how a range repair goes. In student rentals around Oakland, the South Side and Bloomfield, the range is usually a basic model that the landlord, not the tenant, decides whether to fix.

Basement laundry
In older houses the washer and dryer are often downstairs, past narrow steps and low beams, draining to a laundry tub or floor drain. Tell us how to get down there.
Rowhouses & older homes
New appliances often sit on old wiring, gas lines and vents. We check what feeds the machine as well as the machine.
Hillsides & parking
Steps up to the front door, permit-only blocks, alley entrances. A note about access when you book gets the visit started sooner.
Rentals & landlords
Tenants can book. The owner or manager gets the diagnosis and the price, and approves before any work.
Cold garages & porches
A spare fridge or freezer in an unheated space may stop holding temperature in winter without anything having failed. Check the manual's temperature range first.
Honest advice
If an older machine isn't worth the repair, we'll tell you so, and explain what actually broke.

How a Range Repair Visit Works

01

Describe the Problem

The brand, the model number if it's handy, and what the appliance is doing. A photo of the rating label is a bonus.

02

Diagnosis On Site

The technician tests the appliance and its power, water, drain, gas or vent until the failed part is found.

03

Explanation and Quote

You hear what failed and what the repair costs, then decide. Nothing starts without your OK.

04

Repair and Test

The part goes in, the appliance runs a cycle, and you see that it works before we leave.

FAQ

Range Repair: Questions We Hear

Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.

Something else on your mind?

Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.

Range and stove name the same thing, a single appliance that cooks on top and bakes underneath. A cooktop is just the burners, built into a counter. On this site, the range page covers whole-unit problems, the stove page covers burners, and the cooktop page covers built-in surfaces.

On an electric range, one side of the 240-volt breaker may have tripped, letting the display work while the elements can't. A loose terminal block or failed control relay can do the same. On a gas range, check the gas valve is open.

Yes. Manufacturers require it on freestanding and slide-in ranges. It stops the range tipping forward if weight is put on the open oven door, which can injure a child. If yours rocks when you press on the door, the bracket isn't engaged.

Yes, including Wolf, Viking, Thermador and other pro-style ranges. Tell us the model when booking, since some parts are specific to them.

Moving a range can loosen the power cord or terminal block, kink the gas connector, or damage a wiring harness. Don't keep using it if you smell gas. A technician will check the connections first.

It depends on age, condition and what failed. For burner, igniter or element problems, repair is usually cheaper. We'll tell the landlord if a repair isn't worth doing.
