GE Appliances Freezer Repair in Houses, Apartments and Rentals

We have no affiliation with GE Appliances and are not one of its service centers. A freezer still covered by the GE Appliances warranty belongs with GE Appliances first. Once it's out of coverage, give us the model number and the symptom when you book so we can look into parts ahead of time.

Basement laundry
In older houses the washer and dryer are often downstairs, past narrow steps and low beams, draining to a laundry tub or floor drain. Tell us how to get down there.
Rowhouses & older homes
New appliances often sit on old wiring, gas lines and vents. We check what feeds the machine as well as the machine.
Hillsides & parking
Steps up to the front door, permit-only blocks, alley entrances. A note about access when you book gets the visit started sooner.
Rentals & landlords
Tenants can book. The owner or manager gets the diagnosis and the price, and approves before any work.
Cold garages & porches
A spare fridge or freezer in an unheated space may stop holding temperature in winter without anything having failed. Check the manual's temperature range first.
Honest advice
If an older machine isn't worth the repair, we'll tell you so, and explain what actually broke.

How a Freezer Repair Visit Works

01

Describe the Problem

The brand, the model number if it's handy, and what the appliance is doing. A photo of the rating label is a bonus.

02

Diagnosis On Site

The technician tests the appliance and its power, water, drain, gas or vent until the failed part is found.

03

Explanation and Quote

You hear what failed and what the repair costs, then decide. Nothing starts without your OK.

04

Repair and Test

The part goes in, the appliance runs a cycle, and you see that it works before we leave.

How GE Appliances builds its freezers

GE freezers include upright and chest units and the freezer sections of its refrigerators. Chest freezers are simple and usually manual-defrost, so their failures are typically a start relay, a thermostat or the sealed system. Frost-free uprights and fridge freezers use an evaporator fan and a defrost heater; when the defrost fails, the coil ices over and the freezer warms. A freezer in an unheated garage or basement may not run properly when the room gets too cold, so check your manual. After a power outage, a full freezer holds food longer than a half-full one, so keep the door closed.

Parts that tend to fail on GE Appliances freezers

  • Defrost heater failed
  • Evaporator fan motor stopped
  • Compressor start relay failed
  • Thermostat not calling for cold
  • Door gasket not sealing

FAQ

GE Appliances Freezer: Questions We Hear

Quick answers to what people ask most. If yours isn't here, bring it up on the phone or type it into the notes box when you book.

Something else on your mind?

Reach out with the brand, the symptom and a model number if you have one. Some questions we can answer on the spot; the rest a technician can check in person.

A door gasket that isn't sealing or a defrost system failure are the usual causes. We check the seal, then test the defrost heater, thermostat and control.

FoodSafety.gov puts it at roughly 48 hours for a full freezer and about 24 for one that's half full, provided nobody opens the door. If the freezer doesn't cool properly after power returns, we can check it.
