How Maytag builds its refrigerators
Most Maytag refrigerators sold since the buyout are Whirlpool designs: the ice maker, water inlet valve, evaporator fan and defrost heater in a Maytag French-door usually match a Whirlpool of the same generation. The PowerCold button just runs the compressor and fans harder for a while, so it is not a fix for a warm box. Typical complaints are an ice maker that quits, a fresh-food section warming because the evaporator has frosted over, and a squeal from a fan with a failing bearing. Pre-2006 Maytag refrigerators were often built at the Amana plant and use their own boards and dispensers, so an older unit gets a parts check before anything is promised.
